Self-Storage Containers and Performance Art

Last Saturday was Shakespeare Day, and in the spirit of the genius playwright, Store That wanted to take a look at self-storage containers and their ties to performance across the world. Many theatre companies and directors have utilised storage units and sea containers within their pieces, and as their performance spaces. Today, the Store That team are going to share some of our favourite uses of self-storage containers within a performance.

DARKFIELD

DARKFIELD are a company that strive to create immersive experiences that are at the forefront of technology and theatre. To do this, all of their experiences take place inside shipping container storage. These performances are not for the faint hearted as some of them take place in complete darkness, asking users to wear headphones. It pushes the limits of the imagination and sound design through transforming seemingly ordinary self-storage containers into something incredible, innovative and unique.

The Boy Who Climbed Out of His Face by Shunt

Another immersive theatre experience now, this one coming from the mind-bending Shunt – a collective of artists that create live performance in unusual locations throughout London. In 2014, their new production The Boy Who Climbed Out of His Face, opened in a temporary space on Greenwich Jetty that consisted of 30 shipping containers. They transformed them into rooms for an audience of 30 to travel through, interacting with different characters.

PLATOON KUNSTHALLE

PLATOON KUNSTHALLE is a company that have worked to provide experimental spaces for performers, artists, and creatives. They have 2 buildings that consist of 34 self-storage containers, one in Berlin and one in Seoul. They plan to open more across the world to ensure creatives always have an affordable and innovative space to develop projects and much more.

The Unreturning by Frantic Assembly

Frantic Assembly are a theatre production company that are known for their brave and bold theatre. In 2018, they put on a production called The Unreturning. It explored the struggles that men returning from war face and was set in a self-storage container.
