Blue Monday: 10 Ways To Banish Blue Monday Blues

With Christmas over, terrible weather and the fact we still have February to cope with, this time of year can often leave people wondering ‘What else do I have to look forward to in 2017?’

Monday 16th January will mark what is often known as ‘the most depressing day of the year’- also known as Blue Monday. So here is our guide to finding happiness on Blue Monday:

Plug in your Headphones

Remember to turn up your car radio on your way to work this Monday. Studies have found that listening to upbeat music can significantly boost your mood and reduce anxiety.

Exercise

The terms ‘endorphin rush’ or ‘runner’s high’ is often thrown around to describe the huge mood lift experienced after exercise. However, research has found just 20 minutes of cardiovascular exercise can produce a mood change that lasts as long as 12 hours.

Get Outside

Embrace the natural light and see if you can venture out the office on your lunch break, even if it’s for 10 minutes. Natural light helps to stabilise serotonin in the brain and triggers endorphins that both work to improve your mood.

Meditate

Taking time before and after work to meditate can increase your happiness. When taking some deep breaths you take in oxygen that will even out the neurochemistry in your brain and make you feel good.

Eat Some Chocolate

Dark chocolate is a certified route to happiness aka the best thing I’ve heard all day!

Recent research suggests that the higher the cocoa percentage in chocolate, the more feel-good chemicals inside it, meaning a couple of bites of chocolate could improve your mode.

Organise Your Life

There is nothing more therapeutic than decluttering your home. Owners of cluttered homes had higher levels of the stress hormone and were more depressed. By taking the time to tackle piles of laundry, sort through paperwork or find space for your belongings, it will help you feel happier and more relaxed.

If you have spent the time decluttering your home and find some objects that no longer have a place, why not place your items in self-storage?
