Storage Throughout Time and Space: How Doctor Who have used Self Storage Container
A staple of a British Saturday night since it’s revival in 2005, Doctor Who is a show known for its time travelling protagonist and encounters with alien life. Something that may surprise you, is that The Doctor’s and their companions regularly come into contact with the self storage container when battling the universe and saving the Earth! Here at Store That, we’ve gathered our favourite appearances of storage units in the well-loved Sci-Fi show.
Alien conversion units
In series 2, the tenth Doctor and Rose Tyler stumble across a parallel universe where Cybus industries were taking over. People wearing ear pods were brainwashed and ordered to go to a container storage facility that had been adapted into a huge Cybermen factories. Humans were set to be converted into the terrifying alien species known as the Cybermen, until The Doctor saved the day!
A parking nightmare
The TARDIS (Time and Relative Dimension in Space) can materialise and dematerialise pretty much anywhere. This does provide certain logistical challenges. In Fear Her, an episode that was set during the 2012 Olympics, The Doctor lands the TARDIS in between two shipping container storage units. This would’ve been fine, had he not parked the wrong way. When he opens the door, he ends up facing the unit and can’t get out. Not to worry, he quickly fixed it by reassessing and parked more appropriately!
The Master of container storage
The Doctor’s arch enemy, The Master, died at the end of series 3. We thought we had seen the last of him after he refused to regenerate but, we were wrong. The End of Time Part One saw The Master resurrected by a secret society. They used his human wife, Lucy Saxon, to bring him back to life, but it went wrong. The failed resurrection saw The Master living in abandoned shipping container storage, trying to repair his broken body.
Torchwood
In the spin-off series Torchwood, an early member of the team decided she wanted alien tech for herself. Suzie Costello was so obsessed with the possibilities of alien advancements that she stole from Torchwood. All the tech she acquired was hidden in a self storage container unit that was discovered after she died.
Sheffield Steel
The latest incarnation of The Doctor, played by Jodie Whittaker, wasted no time implementing the self storage container. In her first episode, The Doctor finds herself sans TARDIS and sonic screwdriver. Using an abandoned storage unit, she gets to work building a brand-new sonic device out of nothing but junk and spoons – how inventive!
