General Tips
Before we delve into more specific storage tips for different items, there are a few general pieces of advice we can offer.
1. Cleaning: First and foremost, we always recommend cleaning your items before putting them in storage containers for rent.
2. Labelling: Labelling your boxes will allow for easy access in the future. You’ll thank yourself later!
3. Orientation: Always pack items away in their intended orientation. This will allow you to avoid the effects of gravity which could cause damage.
4. Darkness: Storing your items in darkness is usually preferred, as items such as photographs, books, and furniture can lose colour if exposed to the light.
Clothing
An overflowing wardrobe is a common reason why lots of people search for storage containers for rent year on year. There are special considerations you need to make, however, such as provisions for mould, mildew, and odour.
Simply hanging your clothing on an exposed rack and wheeling it into your storage container isn’t a good idea. After drying and ironing your clothing, we recommend packing these into vacuum pack bags or airtight storage bins. If opting for the latter, we recommend purchasing some silica gel packets to draw up any moisture.
Paintings & Photographs
Paintings and photographs are also commonly stored in our units here at Store That. As such, we have experienced advice on how to store these items properly. With canvas being a fragile material and photographs often being sentimental, extra care is required.
Paintings should be vertically packed in an opaque container and stored in a dark area. It’s important that they can still breathe, so bear this in mind. You should also separate your paintings using a thin cloth.
As for photographs, these should be stored in carboard boxes rather than plastic. Store them in a dark area that has a consistent temperature.
Furniture
Whether you’re moving home or downsizing, our storage containers for rent are the perfect solution if you need to make some extra room by moving furniture. Dissemble your furniture to the best of your ability - top tip: don’t remove the legs on your sofas, this will avoid any damage to the fabrics. Line your floor with a felt sheet for ultimate protection from scratches. Loosely cover your belongings with some sort of material or plastic sheet and avoid storing heavy items on top. Leave 1-2 inches between each item, as this will help with air circulation.
