Bands Who Started in Shipping Containers in London
Music, something we all love and appreciate. From rock ‘n’ roll to the rhythm ‘n’ blues, the genres have expanded over the decades, each brandishing their own icons. Across the different musical categories, there is one thing that unites them – shipping containers in London! Yes, that’s right, some of the most successful musicians started their ventures in self storage. Let’s take a look.
The Who
Founded in London, and known as one of the most influential rock bands of all time, The Who started off in a cold, damp garage. As their repertoire and popularity started to grow, they began performing around London regularly, moving rehearsals into two adjacent shipping containers in London. Roger Daltrey, Pete Townshend, John Entwistle and Keith Moon went on to sell over 100 million records worldwide! We’re sure that the countless hours of rehearsal in chilly garages and storage units would have put many bands off, but for The Who, it certainly payed off.
The Kinks
Formed by Ray and Dave Davies in Muswell Hill in 1963, The Kinks rehearsed in various shipping containers in London, before they hit the bigtime. After breaking the UK music scene in just a couple of years, they then consistently topped the US charts. Their early garage rock days are the most celebrated by some, as it produced the raw sound of 60’s rock music, and some sharp attitudes! Their success inspired iconic Britpop bands Oasis and Blur… and to think, it began in an empty sea container back in the 1960s.
Arctic Monkeys
Formed in Sheffield in 2002, Arctic Monkeys were heralded as one of the first bands to come to public attention via the internet. Their debut album, Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not (2006), became the fastest selling debut album in UK chart history and has been hailed as one of the greatest debut albums of all time. In the years leading up to the success of their first album, the band regularly rehearsed in shipping containers in London, on their journeys down south before those first, early gigs.
